Chapter 7
The creak of the old hinge made Colton look up. He was stunned for a moment at the woman standing in the doorway. Was this the prim, composed woman who’d disappeared half an hour before?
The hair that had been demurely swept back into a neat bun now hung loose and tousled around her shoulders. His fingers itched to see if it was as soft as it looked, even still damp. Her white night gown was almost translucent, giving him just a hint of the outline of her body without actually letting him see it.
Colton’s mouth went dry. He stood staring for the space of several seconds before his brain began to work again.
“You look amazing.” He couldn’t resist looking her up and down again.
Susan lifted one hand to toy with a curl draped over her shoulder.
“You really think so?” The slight crease between her eyes told him she wasn’t just fishing for compliments, she really didn’t know how beautiful she was.
“I do.” His body tightened as he took a step closer, remembering he’d removed his boots and socks while he’d waited. As he got closer to her, he caught the scent of flowers. He didn’t know what kind, but it made him want to lick her skin and see if it tasted as sweet as she smelled. He moved slowly, giving her a chance to move away, say something or step away. But she didn’t. Instead she stood there, her eyes half-lidded as she waited for him to reach her.
“I take it from this you’re sure you want to do this?” He slid one finger along the open neckline of the oversized shirt. The cut and style brought an image to his mind of her wearing one of his shirts. Now he couldn’t wait to get her out of this and later, much later, hopefully she’d wear one of his.
He moved in close, wrapped one arm loosely around her waist and lowered his lips to hers. Heat sizzled through him as their mouths met. Desire pooled low in his belly and made his jeans grow tight.
Damn.
Was it because he’d not been with anyone since Riley came to live with him or was there something else about Susan that made her so hard to resist? That made him ache to touch her? Colton didn’t know and at this moment he didn’t care. He didn’t know if he ever would. What mattered right now was the woman in his arms and how she made him feel.
All he wanted right now was to make her feel as amazing, as spectacular as she made him feel. And as good as he felt, it would only get better. Or at least that was his hope, only time and a little experience between the two of them would tell.
Her lips opened to him, letting him taste her. One arm came up and wrapped around his neck. She groaned beneath his kiss, her body softening as it moved into his.
The heat pouring from her only made him want more.
